A Cranky Case

I recently sold an old wooden ice cream maker for a best offer of $55.

In the description I made some mistakes that bit me in the butt when the buyer opened a case as item not as described.

My Actual Listing:

Vintage Rustic Primitive Decor White Mountain Freezer Ice Cream Maker Hand Crank

6qt

This hand cranked ice cream maker would make a beautiful décor piece in your Rustic/Primitive/Country style kitchen.

It does crank and presumably work, but there is rust and aging throughout - I think it is more of a show piece than for actual use.

Here is the case:

The buyer requested a return
Comments:
The listing said that it was old, but fully functional. I intended to clean it up and try it out. But this is a mess, mainly because the top of the milk canister is missing...

Hello, The item description stated that it was a decorative piece. I will gladly accept a return but I will deduct the shipping cost, and a 10% restocking fee. Thank you

Look at the Specific part of you description--this states that the product may be used but still is fully functional.. I purchased this freezer knowing that it had rust, but thought it was fully functional and that I could clean it up.... You never said that the lid on the freezer part was missing! Now you expect me to pay to ship it back plus you intend to charge me a 10 percent restocking fee??? This is no way acceptable to me!!!!! I'll probably be contacting E-bay for their decision on this sale.

My return policy is that buyer pays return shipping. I will waive the normal 10% restocking fee, but feel that the condition of the item was fully disclosed.
No where in the description does it say "fully functional" - only that the crank piece works.
I am also willing to let eBay make the final decision.
Thank you.

This is where I went wrong! I'd listed the item as "USED" not "For Parts" - I was thinking it was a used decoration and all decorations have to do to function is sit there. She was thinking it was a used ice cream maker. And according to eBay:

Used: An item that has been used previously. The item may have some signs of cosmetic wear, but is fully operational and functions as intended. This item may be a floor model or store return that has been used. See the seller’s listing for full details and description of any imperfections.

Uh oh. Well I did not try to argue with eBay that I really was thinking someone would buy the piece as a decoration because I did say that the crank worked. Oh well.

I learned my lesson and hope that by sharing these details some of my readers will too.

  1. I love the title of your post! Did you have a photo showing that the top of the milk canister was missing? Just curious, did you list it under ice cream makers or under collectibles?

    1. Thanks. Yes I had photos of all sides. It was listed under Kitchen > Vintage Small Appliances.

  2. Thank you for sharing. I'm sure I have a ton of things to list (one day!) that I thought I would list as used. Now I need to think, well does it work too or not. I'm sure you saved me an issue or two. When we ever meet up for coffee, the first one is on me!

Speaking of coffee, I tried a Taco Bell biscuit taco today (they sold out on Cinco De Mayo). It is very bad for you but it's good going down. I also got a coffee. Their coffee was surprisingly good. Whodathunk?!

Question - when you go to the DAV on Va Beach Blvd, does your phone work when you try and look things up? Mine NEVER does unless I'm standing right at the window - so annoying.

While I was there I picked up a Boynton mug for .99, two Wedgwood bread plates for .99, a Wedgwood cup and saucer for .99 each, a small print of the Brooklyn Bridge for .45, and a Fire King peach lustre pie plate for 1.98. I also found the plainest, ugliest beige Pyrex mixing bowl for 3.00 at a yard sale but it was in mint condition and I couldn't leave it behind. It's the middle bowl of a three piece set. A BOLO - Disney Hakuna Matata Mug (from the Lion King). I got one for .75 and the solds on eBay run from 6.75-39.99.

    1. My phone doesn't work in DAV either - they have such cheap ceramics I love it. I've gotten lots of good mugs there. Nice finds!!

There's a new dunkin donuts on our side of town so I've been going there WAY too much and in fact am headed there again this morning... so no I haven't but my husband loves the taco bell breakfast. I've tried their cinnabon dessert ball things and they are sinful!!

  3. I did something similar. I listed a book as very good but didn't read the statement that says what very good means. I disclosed the flaws in the condition but still because I called it very good the buyer expected better. I thought I was in the right until she pointed out what it said under very good. oops.

    1. Yes, I think that the seller's description would supersede the eBay definition. For me personally when I am buying I always look at what the seller has said not the eBay description.
I think that my buyer was totally aware of the condition, but was hoping that the ice cream maker would be salvageable - and when it wasn't said it was not as described knowing the eBay definition.
